Douglas Long

Douglas Long, age 67, passed away in the comfort of his home in Marshalltown on Wednesday, June 29th. A celebration of his life will be held from 5-7:00 p.m. Saturday, July 23rd,(PLEASE NOTE DATE) at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Born on November 14th, 1954, in Marshalltown, he was the son of Dwight and Patricia (Gersdorf) Long. He graduated from the Union-Whitten High Schools in 1972. Even though he traveled the world and until last month resided in the Philippines, Whitten was always home. He ventured to California with his brother and sister in the late 1970’s where he worked at Angels Hardware Stores. In 1988, he and his brother returned to Eldora to operate Rascal’s Bar. He later was employed at Diamond Dave’s and Legends in Marshalltown until health issues arose. He greatly missed working with the public and claimed numerous friends through the years. Doug was united in marriage to Mari Schult and to this union, a son Bryce was born. He was Bryce’s biggest fan. From watching pro-wrestling meets on TV to simple walks in the neighborhood, time with his son was precious. He also enjoyed watching the Iowa Hawkeyes, St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Bears; dinners at Taylor’s Maid-Rite and Zeno’s Pizza and cooking. Mari and Doug later divorced but have remained friends throughout the rest of his life. Left to cherish his memory is his son Bryce Long (Shelby) of Ottumwa, his brother H. Dwight (Melanie) Long of Marshalltown and sister Cyndy Sue Long of Marshalltown as well as other family and friends. In death, he rejoined his parents.
