Douglas Swearingen, 72, of Marshalltown, died Saturday afternoon, March 24th, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Private family memorial services will be held. There will be no public visitation; however a register book will be available this week. For condolences, please visit www.mitchellfh.com. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to his family. The Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Doug and his family. Ph 641-844-1234. Born on December 4th, 1934, he was the son of John and Rita (Witte) Swearingen. He attended school in Waterloo and graduated from the Mt. Ayr High School. Doug served our country honorably in the United States Air Force from October 1954 to January 1959. On December 14th, 1965, he was united in marriage to Ann Carlsonat the 1st United Methodist Church in Marshalltown. They have resided here all of their married lives where he was a police officer for the City of Marshalltown from April 1st, 1966, until retiring on October 23rd, 1990. Mr. Swearingen was one of two nominees from the State of Iowa to attend the FBI Academy from January until graduating in March of 1975. Doug was a life member of the Marshalltown Harry C. Harter VFW Post #839 serving as Post Commander 2001-2002, VFW District Commander 3rd District 2002-2003. Left to mourn his loss are his loving wife of 42 years, Ann, four children: Susan (Thomas) Wright of Collins, Iowa, Barbara (Ed) DeLangis of Pensacola, FL, Jim Swearingen of Moline, IL., and Lorianne (Dale) Robison of Dallas, TX., grandchildren: Joseph, Melissa, Tracy, Jon and Megan, his sister Kas (John) Clausen of Carroll, Iowa and brother Duane Skip (Nancy) Swearingen in Arizona. In death he has rejoined his parents.
