Dr. Harry Hansen, 80, of Marshalltown, died early Friday, January 22, 2010, at Westbrook Acres under the care of Iowa River Hospice.Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 26, 2010, at Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown with Chaplain Bobby Shomo officiating. Burial will be in Green Mountain Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Iowa River Hospice. Visitation will be on Monday from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Phone 641-844-1234.Harry Ernest Hansen was born on July 27, 1929, in Dike, Iowa. He was the son of Hans and Jensina (Christoffersen) Hansen. He graduated from Dike High School and joined the United States Navy where he served for four years. Harry served in World War II and the Korean War as a machinist mate second class. In 1950 he left the Navy and attended pre-dental school and the College of Dentistry and College of Orthodontics at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. He practiced dentistry for two years in Cedar Falls and one year in Toledo. Harry then practiced orthodontics for four years in Des Moines before opening his own orthodontic practice in Marshalltown in 1967. He practiced in Marshalltown until his retirement in 1987. Harry married Phyllis Grooters on May 15, 1954, in Cedar Falls, Iowa.Harry enjoyed attending school activities and sports events for his granddaughters at GMG School District, St. Anthonys, and East High School in Des Moines. He especially enjoyed sharing hot dogs at the games with his wife. He and Phyllis always went to Grandparent Thanksgiving Dinner at St. Anthonys and Green Mountain every year. He was happiest being with his family.Harry is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Phyllis Hansen; his three children: Mike (Susan) Hansen of Forney, TX, Karen (Ken) Madison of Marshalltown, and Nancy Schoborg of Des Moines; his three granddaughters Kelcy and Katy Madison and Natasha Schoborg; his two stepgrandchildren Jason Madison and Alisha (Andy) Neuroth; his three step-great-grandchildren Landen and Alivia Neuroth and Jase Madison; his brother Donald (Joan) Hansen of Idaho; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.Harry is preceded in death by his parents Hans and Jensina Hansen; his brother Chris Hansen; and his three sisters Margrethe Land, Dagny Corwin and Marcella Mathews.
