Dr. Thomas Speas

Dr. Thomas William Speas, 82, of Marshalltown, passed away on Friday, September 9, 2016 at his home. Memorial services for Tom will be held on Thursday, September 15, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. Visitation will be on Wednesday, September 14 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. also at the funeral home. Thomas Speas was born on January 14, 1934 in Marshalltown to Glenn and Safrona Davis Speas. On September 5, 1954, Tom was united in marriage to Mary Lou Miller in Marshalltown. He received his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from Iowa State University in 1958. Dr. Speas worked for 35 years as a large animal Veterinarian and retired in 1993. He also was a Supervisor for Marshall County from 1993 until 1998. Tom was a lifetime Iowa State Alum, member of the Gentle Doctors Society and the IVMA Association. He liked watching St Louis Cardinal Baseball and Iowa State Cyclone games. Tom loved his horses and would often drive horse and buggies in parades and weddings. Above everything else; Tom enjoyed the time spent with his children and grandchildren. Tom is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Lou. Children: Steven Speas of Marshalltown, Michael (Laurel) Speas of Port Washington, Wisconsin, Kathy Speas (Andy Sikora) of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Kindra Severidt of Jacksonville, Florida and Mark (Jodie) Speas of Big Rapids, Michigan. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and siblings Judy (David) Beane of Garwin and Margaret (Lisle) Cook of Hubbard. Tom is preceded in death by his parents Glenn and Safrona and sister Marilyn Moon.
