Duane Davis, 61, Marshalltown businessman, died Friday afternoon, May 1st, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. A memorial service celebrating Duanes life will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, May 4th, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Private family interment at a later date. There will be no visitation. Born on June 25th, 1947, he was the son of O.L. Red and Evelyn (Shelley) Davis. He grew up in the Ryan-Davis Funeral Home in Melbourne and enjoyed teasing and playing several pranks in town never hurting but always seeing a lighter side to things. He graduated from the West Marshall High School in 1965. Following graduation, he served our country honorably in the United States Air Force during the Viet Nam War. He returned home and was employed by Otto Vajgrt at his service station on North Center Street. He later owned and operated Bee-Line Repair on North 2nd Ave and was currently the owner and operator of Laser Engraving/Budget Truck Rental/A and A Auto Rental on the corner of Center and State Streets. Duane was a member of the Optimist Club and dearly loved Sprint Car Racing in Knoxville. He even was released from the hospital last Friday to go to the races that he loved. He served on the Hall of Fame Board of Directors since its inception and was a hall of fame member. Duane volunteered his time there and will always be a part of its history. Left to celebrate his life are his children: Lori (Mark) Vajgrt of Dunbar, A.J. (Mindy) Davis of Charlestown, Indiana and their soon-to-be-born daughter, his sisters: A. Marie (Gary) Smith of Vidalia, GA and Karen (Randy) Koskovich of Ely, Iowa, step-father LaVerne Landon of the Embers in Marshalltown and the Landon family, cats Charlie and Abner as well as numerous other family and friends. In death he has rejoined his parents.
