Ph. 641-844-1234 Born on November 2, 1924, at home in Toledo, he was the youngest son of eight children born to Alva and Elizabeth Lottie (Yetley) Appelgate. He graduated from the Toledo High School in 1942 and soon enlisted in the United States Army serving his country honorably in the medical corps in Europe. On New Years Eve of 1947, he married Tama High School graduate, Shirley Bryant. After their marriage, he began an extensive career in business starting with the grocery store in Toledo along with his brother, Lowell and then Sawyer Biscuit (now Keebler) in Chicago. Wanting the quality of Iowa life back, he moved the family to Des Moines where he was advertising manager for AGI Stores. Some years later, he returned to his hometown to purchase the Simes Clothing Store that he and Shirley ran until retiring. Not wanting to slow down, he began a sales consulting business for the next 16 years. In retirement, there was always one more little project to complete which kept him young. He enjoyed time at the cabin at the lake, visiting with friends young and old, wintering in Florida, and treasured his family. Dwight was the original Toledo graphic designer before the term was known. A proud WWII veteran and American, he is survived by his loving wife of nearly 65 years, Shirley, children Linda (Jim) Walsh of Marshalltown, Dennis (Sharlene) Appelgate of Toledo and Thomas (Teresa) of West Palm Beach, FL.; his grandchildren and their families - Ryan (Kelli) Walsh and Emily, Jake, Amy, Ashley, Hayden and Dillon all of Marshalltown; Angela (Brian) Hoisington and Mallory, Austin, Avery and Addison all of Olathe, KS; Stephanie (Joe) Siskind of Cedar Rapids; Benjamin Appelgate of San Diego, CA; Whitney Appelgate of Atlanta, GA; and Lauren Appelgate of West Palm Beach, FL, his sisters: Twyla Wagaman and Gloria Ohrt both of Marshalltown, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. In death, he rejoined his brothers Ward, Glen, Lowell and sisters Darlene and Wanda. Dwight was passionate about his family, his career and will always be remembered for his radiant, infectious smile.
