Dwight Richmond Surber, 81, of Gladbrook, passed away on Sunday, November 30, 2025 at his home.
Memorial services for Dwight will be held on Wednesday, December 10, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. at Gladbrook Methodist Church. Visitation will be on Tuesday, December 9, 2025 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. also at Gladbrook Methodist Church. Dwight Surber was born on October 23, 1944 in Des Moines. He was the son of Hershel “Kemo” Cameron and Velma “Susie” (Carlson) Surber. Dwight graduated from high school in Altoona in 1962 and went on to Grandview University. He finished his education at Iowa State University with an Associate’s Degree in Engineering. On July 11, 1965, Dwight was united in marriage to Joan Blood at the Altoona Methodist Church. Dwight had been the assistant to the Tama County Engineer for 30 years. He had also worked for the Grundy County Engineer. Dwight was a member of Gideon’s International, Lions Club and the Gladbrook Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Brother’s in Blue and Via de Cristo- religious retreats. Dwight enjoyed woodworking and making walking sticks. He was also the town handyman for many years in Gladbrook. Dwight enjoyed square dancing, camping, traveling and the occasional nap along with a little bit of tomfoolery. He was adventurous, yet cautious, loyal, and devoted, and loved to help others.
Dwight is survived by his wife of sixty years- Joan; children: Dana (David) Brown, Pete Surber and Jody Surber. Grandchildren: MacKenzie Brown, Morgan Brown, Lewis Vulk and Larson Vulk and great-grandchildren: Daemion Caron and Braxton Caron. Brother: Steve Surber (Lisa), many nieces and nephews and one dog: Lil’ Dood.
Dwight is preceded in death by his parents: Hershel and Velma.
