Edgar Sayre Jr, 96, of Marshalltown, Iowa and formerly of Plano, Texas, passed away on Friday, October 28, 2016 at the Iowa River Hospice Home in Marshalltown, Iowa. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 5, 2016 at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown, Iowa. Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. until service time at 11:00 a.m. Military Honors will be provided by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 839 and by American Legion Posts in the Marshalltown area. Edgar Marr Sayre Jr was born on September 10, 1920 in Marshalltown at Deaconess Hospital; he was the son of Edgar Sr. and Nettie (Seberg) Sayre. Edgar attended school in the Marshalltown Community School District graduating with the Class of 1938. Edgar served his country honorably in the United States Air Force from 1942 until 1945 and was a Glider Pilot Instructor. On June 30, 1945, Edgar was united in marriage to Phyllis Downs at Perrin Field in Denison, Texas. They had lived in Marshalltown, Syracuse, New York, and Plano, Texas, as Edgar worked for Lennox Industries. He had been a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed golf, crossword puzzles and was a great artist. Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 71 years, Phyllis; son, Craig (Becky) Sayre of Marshalltown, Iowa; daughter-in-law, Margo Sayre of Phoenix, Arizona; grandchildren: Sean (Miriam) Sayre, Tina (Travis) Wilbur, Scott (Carrie) Sayre, Bret (Melanie) Sayre, Kara (Max) Adona, Natalie (David) Roelfzema, Sarah (Joe) Stone, Travis (Valeria) Prusha, Kristin (Ken) Peck, and 18 great-grandchildren: Thomas Sayre, Joseph Sayre, Whitney Wilber, Cole Wilber, Dalton Stone, Ezra Stone, Sophia Stone, Gabriel Prusha, Brandon Peck, Chase Peck, Karinna Sayre, Jayden Adona, Allison Adona, Kadence Roelfzema, Keyan Roelfzema, Kylin Roelfzema and Kolden Roelfzema. In death Edgar rejoins his parents; son, Mark Edgar Sayre and great-grandson, Gavin Michael Sayre.
