Edith Louise (Buschbom) DuRand, 97, of 1211 W. State Street, Marshalltown, IA, most recently of Grandview Heights Care Center, passed away on July 28, 2007 following a short illness.Funeral servicesto celebrate her life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, August 13, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home with Rev. Dick Hutton of the Our Savior Lutheran Church officaiting.Visitation will be held from 5-7:00 p.m. on Sunday. She will be laid to rest in the Hillside Cemetery at State Center. Memorials may be directed to the VFW Post 839 Ladies Auxiliary.Born at home on June 9, 1910, in Marietta Twp, Marshall County, she was the 4th daughter of Oscar and Josephine (Riemenschneider) Buschbom. She received her schooling from Marietta Twp #7 School through the 8th grade and then helped her parents on the family farm near State Center.At the age of 18, Edith moved to Des Moines working at a nursing home then on to Las Vegas where she worked as a blackjack dealer. She married Willard Powell and in 1948 they traveled to Fairbanks, Alaska where they worked a gold mine claim accessible by airplane only. She and Willard later divorced. Edith was employed by the postal service in Fairbanks for many years. She married Edwin DuRand and after his death, Edith settled in Roseburg, Oregon. She returned to Iowa in 1990 to be closer to her family.Edith was the happiest helping others and loved to work in her garden, mow lawn, crochet baby booties and put together jigsaw puzzles. She could be seen shoveling her driveway in the wee hours of the morning following a snowstorm well into her 90s, and attributed her long life and good health to hard work.Surviving her are brothers: Andrew Buschbom of State Center and Cecil Buschbom of Marshalltown, several nieces and nephews, as well as many dear friends whom she befriended over the years.In death she has rejoined her husbands, parents, sisters: Florence, Amanda, Mildred, Helen, Arthera, Cordelia and Althea, and brothers: Arnold and Oscar.
