Edith Lovig, 97, of the Villa del Sol in Marshalltown and formerly of Glenwood Place, died Tuesday, January 25, 2011at the Villa del Sol. Mrs. Lovig was a longtime resident of Gilman.Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 28, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Immediately following the services, there will be a lunch with the family prior to the committal services at the Prairie View Cemetery at Gilman. Born Edith Lohberger on September 13, 1913, at home near Garwin, in Tama County, Iowa, she was one of two daughters born to Frank Anton and Emma Mae (Hottel) Lohberger. She received her education in the area of her birth.On September 22, 1930, she was united in marriage to Robert Lovig at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They made their home farming east of Gilman and moved into the town of Gilman upon retirement in 1972. Mrs. Lovig was a forward-thinking and valued part of the Gilman Community. She was a member of the Gilman Community Church, the ladies guild, Tama County Farm Bureau (serving as past president and runner-up Woman of the Year), Central Iowa Art Association, Tama County Extension, the Tuesday Progress Club, Neighborhood Club, Birthday Club and formerly a Girl Scout Leader. Edith thrived in the art world, taking lessons from Nellie Gebbers and enjoyed oil painting. She painted for many years and had a watercolor set in her room at the Villa. Mrs. Lovig was recipient of a Marshall County Fair Blue Ribbon for her painting in 2009. She and her husband Robert took their family to Norway on their 50th Anniversary in 1980 and enjoyed many other trips to Europe, Alaska and yearly to Arizona in the winter. She enjoyed playing cards- especially 500 dancing, keeping up on current issues and spending time with her family.Left to cherish her memory are her children: Jean Peterson of St. Peter, MN, Robert (Leslie) Lovig of rural Gilman, her seven grandchildren: Brian (Joyce) Peterson of Red Wing, MN, Mark (Patricia) Peterson of Chicago, Robyn (Mike) Aiken of Marshalltown, Craig (Marlys) Lovig of Clemons, Jon (Melinda) Peterson of Mankato, MN, Kristin (Patrick) Toegel of Red Wing and Reid (Lisa) Peterson of Richland, WA., 20 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. In death, Edith rejoined her beloved Robert, her parents, sister Esther Johnson and son-in-law E. Dale Peterson.
