Edward Jackson

Edward Gene Jackson, 89 of Marshalltown, passed away on Friday, July 26, 2024, at the Iowa River Hospice Home in Marshalltown, Iowa.


A memorial service will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, at the First Presbyterian Church at 101 S. Center St. in Marshalltown, Iowa. A visitation for family and friends will be from 9:00 to 10:00 A.M. prior to services. Following the service, a private interment service will be held at Riverside Cemetery. Edward was born on January 29, 1935 in Waterloo, Iowa to Robert Jackson and Mildred (Stevens) Jackson, and was raised on a farm located between Reinbeck and Traer, with his brother Wayne, and sister, Helen. He attended Lincoln Township #9, a rural one-room school near Reinbeck, for grades 1 through 5, and then transferred to Dinsdale Consolidated School in 1945, when the rural schools closed. He graduated from Dinsdale in 1954 and attended the Iowa State Teachers College for two years before enlisting in the Army Security Agency in 1954. He served in Arkansas, Massachusetts, Texas and Korea. Upon completing his three years of service, he returned to what is now the University of Northern Iowa and completed his BA Degree in 1959. Edward Taught Industrial Arts and Driver Education at Aplington Community School District for four years. During that time, he took night classes and received his Masters Degree in 1963, at which time he accepted a position as Guidance Counselor in the Reinbeck Community School System. In 1967, he became the Financial Aid Officer at Marshalltown Community College, and retired from that position in 1999, after 32 years. Edward enjoyed fishing and operated a fishing tackle retail business on the internet.


Edward married his school sweetheart and the love of his life, Mary Lou Brubaker, on May 3, 1957 at Amity United Presbyterian Church in rural Reinbeck, to that union, four children were born: Rhonda, Renee, Stacy, and Steven. Mary Lou passed away in 1982 from cancer.


He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Marshalltown and served on the Board of Elders, Board of Deacons, as an usher, the Treasurer for 12 years, and as Assistant Treasurer for four years. He was also active in the Iowa Association of Financial Aid Administrators for 32 years, and was a Board Member and volunteer for the Emergency Food Box of Marshalltown since 2010.


He enjoyed the family vacations to the western states during the early family years as well as the annual fishing trips to Minnesota. Edward was a fan of the UNI athletic teams since five of the six members of his immediate family graduated from there. He also followed the Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Cubs professional teams.


Edward is survived by his four children, Rhonda (Dan) Vaske of Marshalltown, Renee Borton of Marshalltown, Stacy (Tim) Walker of Eldora, and Steven (Angie) Jackson of Littelton, CO.; his grandchildren, Taylor Vaske, Jared Vaske, Jason Freland, Joel Freland, Tyler Walker, Lindsay Walker, and Tanner Walker; and his great-grandchildren Walker and Milo. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Mary Lou, his sister, Helen Kern and brother Wayne Jackson.


In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Ed and Mary Lou Jackson Scholarship Fund in the care of Marshalltown Community College Foundation.
