Edward “Ed” Stanton, age 84, of Haverhill, passed away Friday morning, June 9th, at the Iowa River Hospice Home in Marshalltown.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9:00 a.m. Monday, June 19th (please note date) at the Immaculate Conception Oratory in Haverhill. He will be laid to rest in the Immaculate Conception Cemetery at Haverhill. Visitation will be held from 5-7:00 p.m. Sunday at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home with a 7:00 p.m. Vigil Service. Born on July 11th, 1938, in Marshalltown, he was the son of Clarence and Rose (Grabenbauer) Stanton. He received his education in the St. Mary School. His family grew up across the street from the Riverview Park in Marshalltown. When he was 25, his dad passed away and his mom was united in marriage to Clyde Newlon.
While at Riverview Park, he met the young Betty Stalzer. The two were united in marriage on June 4th, 1956, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Haverhill. They resided in Marshalltown for five years before moving to Haverhill to her grandparents place (Stalzer). Ed was employed at Fisher Controls from a young age until retiring at age 55.
Ed treasured the time with his family and the cabin they had at Holiday Lake. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and spent many days following retirement at the YMCA in Marshalltown. He was a member of Immaculate Conception in Haverhill/St. Francis Parish.
Left to cherish his memory are Betty, his loving wife of 67 years; four sons- Edward, Alan (Mona), Tim and Jim (Jana), six grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; brother Jerry and sisters Donna Hoing, Linda Thiessen and Jackie Wallace; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and the Stalzer family.
In death, Ed rejoined his parents, step-father Clyde Newlon and a brother, Frank “Bud” Stanton.
