Edwin Shives

Edwin Woodrow Woody Shives, 96, of Marshalltown, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, January 24, 2013, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames.Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 2, 2013, at Clemons United Church of Christ in Clemons, Iowa. Burial will follow at the Clemons Cemetery with full military honors performed by the American Legion Post #122. A visitation will be held on Friday, February 1, 2012 at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. in Marshalltown. Phone 641-844-1234.Woody was born on March 28, 1916, in New Providence, Iowa to Ora Edwin and Effie Luella Cruzan Shives. After graduation from New Providence High School, he worked as a carpenter in the area and on June 8, 1940 he married Lois Bartine at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Woody then worked at the Training School in Eldora and as a security officer at the Ordinance Plant in Des Moines. He enlisted in the United States Army on September 18, 1943 until November 8, 1945 and was stationed in the Southwest Pacific with the 44th Tank Battalion as a Mortar Gunner. He was awarded the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with Two Stars, Good Conduct Medal and the Bronze Service Arrowhead while enlisted. When Woody returned home, he and his family resided in Liscomb where he was employed by Bartine Grain Co. In 1948 they moved to Clemons and built their home where he was self employed as a carpenter. In 1952 Woody was appointed the rural mail carrier for Clemons and St. Anthony post offices, holding that position until his retirement in 1979. Woody and Lois lived in Clemons until 1993 when they moved to Marshalltown.Woody was a member of Clemons United Church of Christ, associate member of the First Congregational Church in Marshalltown, American Legion Post #122, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the United States Rural Mail Carriers Association. He loved to hunt, golf, play cribbage, and sports. Woody and Lois travelled extensively during their years together. He was also very active in the church and community while living in Clemons.Woody is survived by his children: Stephen Shives of Clive and Melissa (David) Beall of Vancouver Washington; three grandchildren; two step grandchildren; five great grandchildren, brother in law Cyrus Bartine of Cedar Falls and numerous nieces and nephews.Woody is preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Lois; both of his parents and five sisters.
