In Loving Memory of.. Ellen Ann Spence, 74, of Haverhill, died suddenly, early Monday morning, April 15, 2013, in the peace of her home in Haverhill. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 19, 2013, at the Immaculate Conception Oratory in Haverhill with Fr. Don Czapla officiating. She will be laid to rest in the Immaculate Conception Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-7:00 p.m., Thursday, April 18, 2013. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home with a 7:00 p.m. vigil service. Born Ellen Ann Lemker on January 17, 1939, in Marshalltown, she was the daughter of Henry and Catherine (Knoll) Lemker. Ellen graduated from St. Marys High School in Marshalltown in 1956. The lovely young Ellen, who was the prom queen of her class, was united in marriage to Donald Spence on May 10, 1958, at Immaculate Conception. They made their home in Haverhill all of their married lives. Mrs. Spence was active in her community and was a faithful member of St. Henrys parish in Marshalltown, St. Monicas Study Club, former Immaculate Conception member until their last mass on July 1, 2007. She was also a member of the American Legion Axillary . She will be fondly remembered for her enjoyment of gardening, playing cards (Pepper), growing vegetables, bowling, and her love for her family. She also supported Matts Chicks and the Knights of Columbus. Ellen was employed as Post Master Relief in Haverhill for 25 years and was still working Saturdays until her death. Left to cherish her memory are Donald, her loving husband of 54 years; her sons: Brian Spence of Haverhill, and Greg Spence of Lone Tree, Iowa; daughter-in-law, Marilyn Spence of Marshalltown; her treasured grandchildren: Andy (Courtney) Spence of Mt. Pleasant; Amber (Rovshan) Sultanov of Denton, TX; and Trisha Spence of Lone Tree, Iowa; Sister-in-law, Doris Lemker; nieces: Diane and Kathy; nephews: Jim and Brad; and many friends and family members. In death, she rejoined her parents, Henry and Catherine; her son, Mark in 2008; and brother, Harold Lemker.
