Elmer Bern, 100, of Lincoln, Iowa passed away in Grundy Center Hospital and under the care of Cedar Valley Hospice. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. at Salem Church of Lincoln in Lincoln, Iowa, on Monday, November 30, 2015. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be directed to Salem Church in Lincoln or American Legion in Reinbeck, Iowa. Elmer Wilbur Bern was born on October 26, 1915, on a farm in Lincoln Township in Tama County; he was the son of William and Ella (Dahms) Bern. He attended School in the Reinbeck Community School District graduating with the class of 1934. On December 30, 1940, Elmer was united in marriage to Orleen Murty at Fort Leonardwood, Missouri and they resided in Lincoln, Iowa. Elmer served his country honorably in the United States Army during World War II from 1941 until 1946 he was a Second Lieutenant receiving a Silver Star, Bronze Star and 4 Purple Hearts. He was a member of the Salem Church of Lincoln, Amvets, American Legion, Lions Club and the Oak Leaf Country Club in Rienbeck, Iowa. Elmer was a farmer thru and thru but if he had time he enjoyed fishing, gardening, canning and spraying his fruit trees. Left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Carolyn (Gerald) Riley of St Charles, Illinois and Judy(Darryl) Widmayer of Glabrook, Iowa, grandchildren, Colin Riley, Jennifer Diggs, and Kimberly Timmons, great-grandchildren, Ashland, Gabriella, Abigail, Benaiah and Judah Diggs and Zoey Timmons, siblings Viola Vasey and Leslie Bern. In death Elmer rejoins his parents, William and Ella, Wife, Orleen, son, Gary Bern, brother, Marvin Bern and sister, Arlene Bern.
