Ervin Ab Walkup, 71, of State Center, died Sunday, April 1st, at the Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Funeral services and a celebration of his life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 5th, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church with Pastor Gary MacManus officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Hillside Cemetery at State Center. Friends may call at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home West Marshall Chapel in State Center from 6-8:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Born on August 2nd, 1935, in State Center on the family farm, he was the son of James Clinton and Minnie Ruth (Pothast) Walkup. He graduated from the State Center High School in 1953. On October 2nd, 1960, he was united in marriage to Judith Meier at St. Pauls Lutheran Church in State Center. They resided in the State Center all of their married lives. Mr. Walkup was employed at the State Center Creamery before working at the John Deere Implement Dealership for 11 years. After that time, he worked for American Fire Apparatus in Marshalltown and then retired from Fisher Controls on June 1, 1995. He was an active member of the State Center Volunteer Fire Department and participated in many State of Iowa Fire Conventions. Ervin was also a member of St., Paul Lutheran Church and the UAW Retirees. Left to mourn his loss are his wife, Judith, four children: Robin (Douglas) Hobbs of State Center, Jody (Brian) Kunkel of Marshalltown, Michael Walkup of State Center and Gregory (Christi) Walkup of Lacey, Iowa, 14 grandchildren, one great-grandchild on the way, his siblings: Glenn (Rosemary) Walkup of Urbandale, Marilyn (Bill) Egleston of Marshalltown, Margery (John) Clifton of Rittman, Ohio and John (Judy) Walkup of Marysville, Ohio, sister-in-law Carolyn Walkup of State Center and several nieces and nephews. In death he has rejoined his parents, sister Gladys Pille-Wilson and brother Leland Walkup and a nephew, Doug Walkup.
