Esther Slate

Esther L. Slate, 85, of Marshalltown, died Friday, February 12, 2010, at Southridge Nursing and Rehab Center.Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, February 16, 2010, at First Presbyterian Church in Marshalltown with Dr. Rich King officiating. Burial will be in Badger Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Monday at Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to Iowa River Hospice or First Presbyterian Church. Phone 641-844-1234.Esther Leola Frericks was born on September 11, 1924, at Ackley, Iowa in Franklin County. She was the daughter of Thomas and Matie (Spieker) Frericks. She graduated from Gladbrook High School in 1943. On July 29, 1948, Esther married Mearl Slate at Evangelical United Brethren Church in Gladbrook, Iowa. The couple lived in Toledo, Cedar Rapids, Marshalltown, and Gladbrook.Esther worked at the Tama County Courthouse in Toledo, Iowa. She worked as an auditor clerk, in the Treasurers office, and in the Clerk of Court office. Esther also worked at the Linn County Courthouse in Cedar Rapids. Esther was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Marshalltown and the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing dominoes, card games, cooking, embroidery, loved children and her friends and family.Esther will be missed by her sister Lucille Wauters and several nieces and nephews.In death she has rejoined her parents Thomas and Matie Frericks, her husband Mearl, her children Gary, Sheila, and Brenda, her brothers Henry, Thomas, and Jerry, and her sister Alma.
