Ethel Mae (Bergan) Tietje, 96, of Marshalltown, passed away on Thursday, May 22, 2025 at Harmony Marshalltown.
Funeral services for Ethel will be held on Wednesday, May 28, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Marshalltown. Ethel Bergan was born on December 23, 1928 in Winneshiek County, Iowa. She was the daughter of Carl and Mabel (Kjos) Bergan. Ethel attended the Winneshiek County Schools for her first eight years and then attended Ridgeway High School. She had previously lived in Cresco and Waterloo before moving to Marshalltown in 1952. On August 17, 1952, Ethel was united in marriage to Herbert William Tietje at the Orleans Lutheran Church in Cresco, Iowa. Ethel worked as a media clerk for the Area Education Agency 6 in Marshalltown. She was a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church, former VFW Auxiliary President, member of the LWML, the church sewing guild, various card clubs and former foster grandparent at Franklin school. Ethel enjoyed gardening, playing cards, dominos and puzzles as well as sewing. Above all else, she enjoyed the time with her family.
Ethel is survived by her children: Wayne (Rebecca) Tietje and Mary Ann (Dan) Billman. Grandchildren: Derek (Crystal) Billman, Wade (Becky) Billman, Breanna (Nate Leeper) Billman, Alexander (Eileen) Billman, Jason (April) Tietje and Stephanie (Jason) Van Ersvelde. She is also survived by siblings: Jean (Jim) Morris and Janet (Joe) Frank.
Ethel is preceded in death by her husband: Herbert; parents: Carl and Mabel; siblings: LaVern Bergan, Colleen Hovey, Marvin Bergan and Eldon Bergan.
