Evelyn Stanley, 87, of 305 Sunset Lane, Marshalltown, died Friday morning, May 25th, at the Villa del Sol in Marshalltown while in their care and the Iowa River Hospice. Her death came peacefully at 10:45 a.m., and at that time; she and Wendell were rejoined in eternal dance on heavens ballroom floor.Funeral services and a celebration of her life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 30th, at the First Congregational Church with Rev. Barry Holmes officiating. She will be laid to rest in the Riverside Cemetery. Friends may call at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home from 6-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Ph 641-844-1234.Born Evelyn Thompson on September 25th, 1919, at the family home near Gilman, she was the daughter of Thomas Martin and Mary Jane (Carroll) Thompson. She graduated from the Gilman High Schools Class of 1937 and later attended the American Institute of Commerce in Davenport. While in school, Evelyn played basketball and became a member of the All-State Team and was inducted by the State of Iowa Basketball Hall of Fame in 1970.On April 22nd, 1939, in Davenport, she was united in marriage to Forest Wendell Stanley. They resided at Gilman, Redfield, and Guttenberg and returned to Gilman before moving to Marshalltown in the early 1950s. She was a saleslady at various dress shops in Marshalltown, did secretarial work at Farm Bureau and then home banking representative for Security Bank.Mrs. Stanley was a member of the First Congregational Church, the Theta Chi Sorority, Amity, the Gilman Eastern Star Lodge (served as past Worthy Matron), and enjoyed playing basketball, bridge, golf and dancing. She supported the Chicago Bulls and the Iowa Hawkeyes and truly enjoyed meeting and socializing with people.Left to celebrate her life are her son, Richard of Van Nuys, CA., grandchildren: Wendi Stanley of Marshalltown, Todd (Leah) Stanley of Marshalltown, great-granddaughters Erin and Kaisa, her daughter-in-law Dorothy (Bing) McHone of Marshalltown, sister-in-law Fern Thompson of Marshalltown, nieces Janet Nevins of Marshalltown and Tani Stanley of Lisle, IL., nephews Gaylen Olmstead in Montana and Dale Thompson in Michigan as well as other family and a host of friends.In death she has rejoined her parents, her husband Wendell in 1994, son Tom in 1996, brothers Robert and Raymond Thompson ands sisters Maude Bailey, Anna Reese and Florence Eich.
