Fern Thayer

Fern L. Thayer, 76, of Le Grand, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, October 12, 2013 at Mary Greely Hospital in Ames, Iowa. Funeral services for Fern will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 17, 2013, at Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Public visitation, where her family will be present to greet friends, will be held prior to the services, on Thursday, October 17, 2013 starting at 12:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be directed in Ferns name to her family. Thayer was born on June 5, 1937 in Marshalltown, Iowa, the daughter of George and Nina (Miller) Gull. She was raised and educated in the Albion school district. Fern was united in marriage to Lyle Thayer on October 9, 1981 at the United Methodist Church in Marshalltown. Throughout her life she worked at several different places, including the hospital, Kresges, K-Mart for 26 years, and Villa Del Sol. She had a passion for helping others, collecting rooster statues, and baking, especially at Thanksgiving and Christmastime. Fern was never afraid to speak her mind. She also loved watching wrestling, and the shows Judge Judy and Cops. Left to cherish her memory is her husband of 32 years, Lyle Thayer; children: Larry (Karla) Gibson, James (Patty) Gibson, Lori (Kevin) Jurgensen and Greg Barker; one aunt: Nellie Ecklor; grandchildren: Kurtis (Renee) Gibson, Lance Gibson, Kendra Maulsby, Sydney (Chris) Spratt, Cody Maulsby, Colton Gibson, Keaton Gibson, Aric (Suzie) Jurgensen, Suzie Jurgensen, Greg Jurgensen and Justin Prendergast; 16 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents: George and Nina Gull and one sister Grace Flanders.
