Frances (Mrs. Thomas) Burchland, 84, of rural Gilman, died Saturday afternoon, October 24th, at the Grandview Heights in Marshalltown. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 27th, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. She will be laid to rest in the Prairieview Cemetery at Gilman. Visitation will be one-hour prior to the services. A memorial fund is being established. For condolences, please visit www.mitchellfh.com. The Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Frances and her family. Ph 641-844-1234. Born Frances Michaels on February 26th, 1925, in Newburg, Iowa, she was the daughter of F. Friel and Minnie (Roseland) Michaels. She graduated from the Newburg High Schools Class of 1942. On November 28th, 1943, she was united in marriage to Thomas Burchland at her familys home. They farmed in the Gilman community where she raised her family, worked along side Tom and later worked at the Citizens Savings Bank. Mrs. Burchland was a member of the Gilman Community Church, the Womens Circle of the church and the Good Will Neighborhood Club. Frances will be fondly remembered for her hospitality delivering food and cards to those just home from hospitals, her famous Christmas meals, and baking and cooking. She treasured her family especially the grand and great-grandchildren. She had many funny expressions, witty comments, and was a hard-working lady. Frances will be greatly missed by Tom, her loving husband of 65 years, four children: Sonja (the late John) Wilhau of Grundy Center, Karen (Steve) Freeborn of Ankeny, Kathy (Tom) Knoll of Clarinda and Mike (Nancy) Burchland of Gilman, 11 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and her sister, Dorothy Lyle of Marshalltown. In death, she was rejoined with her parents, son-in-law John, brothers Gerald and Virgil Strand and sister Christine Strand.
