Frank C. Reis, 99, of Marshalltown, passed away Sunday evening, May 6, 2012 at Southridge Nursing and Rehab Center surrounded by his loving family and his Southridge family. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 10, 2012 at St. Marys Catholic Church in Marshalltown. Visitation will be held 5:00 p.m. 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. Military honors will be provided by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #839. Mitchell Family Funeral Home of Marshalltown is caring for Frank and his family. Francis Frank Clarence Reis was born in rural Cass County, IA on October 31, 1912. He was the son of George and Katherine (Follmann) Reis. Frank graduated from the Greenfield High School. Frank enjoyed the Big Band Era and had a small band that often played for barn dances in rural Adair County. Frank was united into marriage at St. Marys Catholic Church in Marshalltown to Opal Darlene McCoy on September 21, 1941. Frank purchased Reis Dry Cleaners in Nevada. Frank then served our country honorably in the United States Army in WWII. After the war, Frank and Opal moved to Marshalltown, where he started working for Neihouse Dry Cleaners and then Crew Lanes as a Manager until retiring at the age of seventy three. He was a member ofSt. Mary's Catholic Church, American Legion, Knights of Columbus, Marshalltown Mens Bowling Association, Vagabonds, and the WWII Memorial Charter. He and Opal enjoyed wintering in Arizona for several years during retirement. Frank also lovedthe outdoors, fishing, hunting,and camping. He liked woodworking,bowling, the Hawkeyes, and the Cubs. Frank will be remembered by his musical abilities (playing the piano, organ, saxophone, and banjo by ear).He will also be rememberedfor the many kindnesses shown to the Pleasant HillSchool students at the Bowling Alley. He taught many peoplein the Marshalltown area to bowl, often custom drilling bowling balls. Frank had considered Southridge his home for the past five years and considered the staff and residents his second family. Frank loved his family dearly and will be greatly missed. He is survived by his children: Steve (LaRue) Reis of Green Mountain, IA, and Cindy (Gary) West of Marshalltown, IA; his grandchildren; Todd (Laila) Reis, Tracy Reis, and Nick West; his great-grandchildren: Jillian, Kaitlyn, and Serena; his foreign exchange daughter, Tjitske deJong Tromp of Holland; his sibling, Isabelle Read of Minnetonka, MN; his brother-in-law, Larry McCoy; his sister-in-law, Leila (Harry) Young; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife, parents, and his siblings: Veronica Lorenze, George Reis, Lawerence Reis, Velma Slovey, Leo Reis, LeVern Reis, Vernon Reis, and William Reis.
