Frank B. Squiers

Frank B. Squiers, 91, of Marshalltown, passed away July 31, 2011 at Southridge Nursing and Rehab Center of Marshalltown. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 4, 2011 at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. Visitation will be held 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 3, 2011 at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the Toledo Public Library. Franklin Bradley Squiers was born July 29, 1920, and passed away on July 31, 2011, two days after his 91st birthday. He was the youngest of five children born to Sumner Ladd and Eva (Walker) Squiers. Frank attended school at Haven and Tama and graduated from Tama High School in 1938. He worked at the Tama paper mill until he enlisted in the Navy in 1942. He was honorably discharged from the Navy on December 15, 1945. On December, 31, 1945, he married Carol Stone at the First Methodist Church in Marshalltown, Iowa. During their marriage, Frank and Carol owned and operated a beef burger shop in Tama and a grocery store in Jewell, Iowa. He was instrumental in establishing the Federated Church in Jewell. Frank then attended barber school in Fort Dodge, served his apprenticeship in Ames, and moved his family to Toledo, Iowa, in June 1962, where he cut hair until retiring in 1985. While barbering and after retiring, Frank drove a truck for Pioneer and a couple of local farmers. He also worked for his nephew, Brian, in his logging business. In Toledo, Frank was an active member of the Presbyterian Church; he also served on the library board and was a member of American Legion Post 72. In December 1998, Frank and Carol moved to a home in Marshalltown where they lived until moving to Glenwood Place in October 2007. Frank was a resident of Southridge Nursing and Rehabilitation at the time of his death. Frank is survived by Carol, his wife of 65 years; son Larry (Karen) of Marshalltown; daughter Lorell of Des Moines; and grandsons Logan (Alyssa) of Corpus Christi Texas, and Grant of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He is preceded in death by his parents; son Gary; sister Ione; and brothers Wallace, Harold, and Don. The family thanks Dr. David Thomas and staff members of Glenwood Place and Southridge Nursing and Rehabilitation for their care and compassion for Frank and Carol over the years.
