Frank Tammen, 76, of rural Marshalltown, died early Thursday morning, May 17th, while in care of the Iowa River Hospice. His death came peacefully at 2:05 a.m. with his loving family at his side at the place he loved- his home. Memorial services and a celebration of his life will be held at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, May 19th, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. A time of fellowship and refreshments will follow in the hospitality room of the funeral home. Flag presentation honors will be by the American Legion Frank Lewis Glick Post #46. Ph 641-844-1234. Born on November 21st, 1930, in Leer, Germany, he was the son of Friedrich and Abeline (Behrends) Tammen. He attended school in Germany and came to the United States in December of 1953. One year later, on December 18th, 1954, he was united in marriage to Gertrud Schakat in Wellsburg. They made Marshalltown their home all of their married lives where he was a bricklayer and did masonry work. Prior to him becoming a US citizen, he served our country honorably in the United States Army from 1955 to 1957. Frank was truly a talented artist of his trade and enjoyed dogs, animals and wildlife, fishing, dancing and square-dancing, trips to Kansas City for the weekends to enjoy football games, his family and his cabin near Bemidji, MN. He was a member of the United Church of Christ and served as an Elder, the Bricklayers Union and the Small Business Association. Left to mourn his loss are his loving wife of 52 years, Gertrud, three daughters: Dorie (Mike) Tammen Brennecke of Belle Plaine, Iowa, Ingrid (Jim) Haase of Morris, IL., and Linda (Jake) Osgood of State Center, ten grandchildren: Amber, Chance and Sam Brennecke, Erin (Luke) Faulkner, Kelly Haase, Ashley Osgood, Josh Courter, Bradley, Tyler and Kadie Osgood, his only brother Wilfried Tammen of Germany and his Schnauzer dog, Buddy. In death he has rejoined his parents and numerous dogs.
