Fred Naylor, a member of the greatest generation, passed from this life on the night of Tuesday, August 16, 2016, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, at the age of 97 years. His death came peacefully holding his wifes hand as she comforted his last moments. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 21, 2016, at the Iowa River Church of the Brethren in rural Marshalltown. Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. until service time at 3:00 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the Iowa River Church of the Brethren or the American Legion. Born Fred Allan Naylor on October 25th, 1918, in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, he was the son of Henry and Stella (Newell) Naylor. He was part of a family of four brothers and five sisters. Fred served our country honorably in the United States Army from 1941 until 1945. He was a German prisoner of war for 27 months of WWII. On June 2, 1946, he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Shirley Brooks, at the Iowa River Church of the Brethren. To this union, four beautiful daughters and one marvelous son were born. Fred was employed at Lennox for 35 years and retired at age 62. He was the manager for Alkire Truck Lines. Fred was a devoted and diehard Hawkeye and he enjoyed all sports, especially golf and bowling. If the Hawkeyes werent playing, a second runner up would be the Boston Red Sox. Mr. Naylor was also a longtime member of the Iowa River Church of the Brethren, Elks Lodge and the American Legion. Left to cherish his memory are Shirley, his loving wife of 70 years, four daughters: Jennie (John) Johnson of Ankeny, Sue (Jeff) Westberg of Coralville, Robin Naylor (Mike Eilander) of Ankeny, Shannon Naylor (Rod) Chyma of Marshalltown and son, Lindsay Naylor of Marshalltown, as well as ten grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and other family members. In death, Fred rejoined his parents, four brothers, five sisters and a son-in-law, Mike Burford.
