Garland “Gar” Schossow, age 75 of Marshalltown, passed away on Wednesday, June 25, 2025 at MercyOne Medical Center in Des Moines.
Garland Ray Schossow was born on August 23, 1949 in Carroll, IA, the son of Ray and Pearl (Nyreen) Schossow. Gar attended West Marshall High School.
On October 23, 1985, Gar was united in marriage with Julie Allen in Marshalltown, IA. From this union, they were blessed with three children: Katie, Jase and Drew.
Gar worked at Vicker’s gas station following high school and later worked at Cooper’s Manufacturing. He worked at Cooper’s for nearly 30 years, retiring in 2001 due to health issues.
Gar was involved in his community through the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, where he was a big brother to several boys, the Lions Club, and Boy Scouts Troop #329. He loved showing his 2012 Shelby GT 500 and 1966 Fairlane at various car shows and taking sports photos for the local newspaper. He also enjoyed junking, selling antiques, camping and taking in countless stray cats over the years.
Gar was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Pearl; and his siblings, Doyle (Eileen) Schossow and Carlene (Fritz) Diemer. He is survived by his wife, Julie; children, Kate Schossow of Marshalltown, Jase (Abby) Schossow of California, and Drew (Paige) Schossow of Colorado; and grandchildren, Brasch, Rayleigh and Thea. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Shelly (Fred) Nadler, Shawn (Lisa) Schossow and Shane (Marsha) Schossow; and great nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 3:00 until 5:00 P.M. on Sunday, June 29, 2025 at Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, June 30, 2025 at Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery near Jolley, IA. Memorial donations may be directed to the Lions Club or the Animal Rescue League of Marshalltown.
