Gary Bumsted, age 75, of Marshalltown, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 3, 2026 at Harmony of Marshalltown.

Per Gary’s wishes, cremation rites have been accorded and no formal services are planned at this time. Memorials in Gary’s name may be directed to his family (Alan Bumsted 3310 Candleknoll Dr. Spring, TX 77388) for a later designation. Gary Joseph Bumsted was born January 13, 1951 in Marshalltown, Iowa. He was the son of Alva and Virginia “Ginny” (Robold) Bumsted. Gary grew up alongside his two siblings, Alan and Susan. He attended school in Marshalltown, graduating with the Marshalltown High School Class of 1969. Gary furthered his education at Marshalltown Community College and Iowa State University.

Following college, Gary moved to Idaho where he worked for a couple years in the forest service in fire prevention. He moved to Alaska where he worked and was part of the International Halibut Commission which sailed between Alaska and Russia in the Bearing Sea. Gary ultimately went back to school and attended culinary school so that he could begin a career in culinary arts and served many years as a sous chef in various areas around Florida. Ultimately, Gary moved back to Marshalltown to care for his parents. He found work at the Iowa Veterans Home. Additionally, Gary worked for Meskwaki Bingo and Casino as a card dealer at the blackjack tables for over 20 years before his retirement. In his free time, Gary was a member of the Marshalltown Elk Lodge 312. During his time, he held nearly every office possible. He liked going to the YMCA for his work outs and to meet new friends. In younger years, Gary took part in many different bowling leagues. In his free time, Gary was a true outdoorsman enjoying hunting and fishing. he liked his time reading over his western novels, spending time with his extended family, making his garden every year and traveling to see his siblings in Illinois and Texas.

Those left to remember and cherish his memory are his siblings, Alan (Stacy) Bumsted of Spring, Tx and Susan Mohler (Al Behrends of Rochelle, Il; nieces and nephews, Justin (Melee) Bumsted and his family, Shane (Molly) Bumsted and his family, Patrick Bumsted, Allison Bumsted (Michael Wane), Abigail (Allen) Barreras and her family, Tiffany (Todd) Adamson and her family, Brittany Mohler and her family and Natasha Mohler and her family. Additionally surviving him is his close relative and friend, Gloria Jones.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alva and Ginny Bumsted; brother-in-law, Monty Mohler and nephew, Broc Mohler.
