Gary Lee Harrington was born June 19, 1949 to parents George and Virginia (Glenney) Harrington in Marshalltown, Iowa, where he attended and graduated from Marshalltown High School. Gary was drafted into the United States Army and served from 1966-1969 during the Vietnam War where he honorably served his country and was later discharged and returned to Marshalltown Iowa. Gary was united in marriage to Deanna “Sue” Nordstrom on June 27, 1970 at the First United Methodist Church in Marshalltown. Together they began a family of their own raising their three children, Jeffrey, Patrick, and Mary Jane. He worked hard and at times hardly worked for 38 years at Fisher Controls in Marshalltown until he retired in 2011. Following retirement, Gary’s pursuit to always be on the go, found himself working part time for 7 years at the Marshalltown Compost and running his own mowing business. Gary and Sue spent many happy years together until Sue’s passing in 2018. Gary was a friend to all and never met a stranger. A very sociable and a man of many pranks. Always a smile on his face and a story peat and repeat. He held memberships with the Isaac Walton League, American Legion Golf Course, U.A.W. 893 in Marshalltown, and the Antique Restores Club. Gary was a big Harley Davidson enthusiast. He also collected and worked on antique cars, Coleman Lanterns, enjoyed golfing, fishing, and creating unique lamps. One of his favorite routines was tinkering in his garage while listening to oldies. Gary treasured his close bond with his two granddaughters, Lizzie and Grace and loved being a part of their activities and celebrating their achievements. On May 1, 2021, Gary was united in marriage to Martha Edgeton. Gary enjoyed his weekly trips to the races with his brother-in-law and best friend Steve Nordstrom. Gary cherished the many visits with his family, friends and close neighborhood families. He is survived by his wife, Martha; his children, Jeffrey Harrington and Mary Jane Bethel; his step children, Tina (Doug) Humrichouse and Wayne (Jean) Edgeton; his grandchildren, Grace and Lizzie Bethel; his 3 step-granddaughters; his sister Sue (Ron) Sharp and her children; Stephanie Schutt Maxfield, Renee Shutt Brown, Brett Shutt, Addison Glommen, Bethany Angel and their beloved family members; Steve (Carla) Nordstrom and his family Megan, Emily, and Allison, John (Rachel) Nordstrom and his family, Mike, Kim, Nadia, Alexis and Ryker, and Nancy IntVeldt and her family, Jimmy (Tish) and Jenny (Matt); alongside several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Gary was preceded in death by his loving first wife of 47 years, Deanna “Sue” Harrington; his son Patrick Alan Harrington; his parents George and Virginia Harrington; and his sister Carol Glommen.
