Gary Earl Mommer, 69, of Gilman died Monday May 24, 2010 at home.A memorial service celebrating Garys life will be held at 11:00a.m. Thursday, May 27 at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 10:00a.m. until the service time. Inurnment will be in Prairie View Cemetery at Gilman. Memorials may be made in Garys honor to the Gilman First Responders. For condolences, please visit www.mitchellfh.com. The Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Gary and his family, phone 641-844-1234. Gary was born at home in Albion, IA on December 25, 1940. He was the second son of four boys born to Harold and Martha (Sprague) Mommer. He graduated from Gilman High School class of 1958. Gary married Janet Elaine Strand on October 12, 1963 in Grinnell, IA. To this marriage were born two boys, Craig Earl and William Gary Mommer. After high school, Gary went to work for Kiowa before moving to Bellflower, CA in 1963. In California he was employed with North American Aeronautics and Smith Tool. Gary returned to the Gilman area in 1965 to make their family home. He was employed with Takin Trucking, Riteway Construction, and Fisher Controls. Gary was a machine operator at Fisher Controls for 33 years, retiring in 1999. He was a retired member of the local UAW 893, a retired member of the Gilman Fire Department,and a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles. After retirement, Gary worked for Strand Excavating for 5 years as a dump truck driver. His true love was the carpentry profession, where he moonlighted as a carpenter on many different projects, specializing in building patio decks, having constructed over 200 decks in the Marshalltown area over the last 30 years. Gary loved his family and wanted to show them off whenever he could, especially his grandchildren. Gary also loved to play cards, watch NASCAR, the Iowa Hawkeyes, fishing and playing with his faithful companion, his dog Scooby. Garys memory will be cherished by his loving wife of 46 years, Janet; his children: Craig (Stacey) and William (Lisa) Mommer, both of Gilman; his grandchildren: Nicholas Earl and Kayla Renee Mommer; his brothers: Roger (Nancy) Mommer of Donna, TX and Larry (Janet) Mommer of Yuma, AZ; his sister-in-law Sherry Killion of Chandler, AZ; many cousins, nieces and nephews, as well as scores of good friends Gary has made in his treasured lifetime.In heaven, Gary rejoins his parents, brother Charles, father and mother-in-law Ralph and Helen Strand.
