Gary Sutherland

Gary Michael Sutherland, 79, of Marshalltown, passed away on Thursday, February 25, 2016 at the Iowa River Hospice Home in Marshalltown. Public visitation for Gary will be held on Monday, February 29, 2016 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, March 1, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at St Henrys Catholic Church in Marshalltown. Memorials may be directed to family for designation at a later date. Gary Sutherland was born on September 7, 1936 in Nevada, Iowa to Harry and Wilma Chitty Sutherland. He graduated from Nevada High School in 1954. On August 12, 1955, Gary was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart Bonnie Quinlan at the First Congregational Church in Marshalltown. Gary had worked for Iowa Electric Light and Power until his retirement in 1992. Gary would also volunteer his time and transport patients to Iowa City Hospital. He was a member of the St Henrys Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Moose Lodge, Kiwanas, past President of the Bowling Association and past President of Union IBEW. Gary was an avid bowler and was very proud of his 300 game and teaching his family on how to bowl. He enjoyed golfing with his brother and work buddies and riding his Gold Wing motorcycle with Bonnie all over the country. Gary is survived by his spouse of 60 years, Bonnie and their son Mick (Janet) Sutherland of Eau Claire, Wisconsin and their children Brandon (Amber) and their children Katie, Owen and Mason. Daughter: Kim (Justin) Howe of Laurel and their sons Jake (Tracy) and their children Blake, Skyler, Ashton and Makena; Drew (Taree) Wright and their sons Caden and Cole; and Luke (Erin) Wright. Son: Brian (Brenda) Stone of Charles City and their son A.J. (Gretchen) and their daughter Alaina and her children Adam, Breanna, Brody and Carissa as well as his other granddaughters Alexis and Caden. Siblings: Craig (Julie) Sutherland of Nevada, Neil (Marcia) Sutherland of Ankeny, Chuck (Susie) Sutherland of Des Moines and Sandy (Kent) Ryan of Ames as well as Garys beloved Yorkie, Mimi. Gary is preceded in death by his daughter Chelle Sutherland, parents Harry and Wilma, granddaughter Allison and brother Wendell Sutherland.
