Gene Collins 86, of Union, Iowa passed away on Thursday, May 30, 2013, at the Eldora Nursing and Rehab Center in Eldora, Iowa. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 3, 2013 at the Calvary Baptist Church in Union, Iowa. Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 2, 2013 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to Iowa Hospice. Gene Collins was born on August 14, 1926, in Eldora, Iowa; he was the son of Edward and Aleta (Carson) Collins. Gene attended School in the Whitten Community School District graduating with the class of 1944. He served our Country Honorably in the United States Army before the Korean Conflict. On June 3, 1951, Gene was united in marriage to Myreta Marshall at the Union Community Church in Union, Iowa. Gene and Myreta lived in rural Union, Iowa on their Century Farm their entire married life. It was the farm Gene and Myreta were very proud of. Gene attended the Calvary Baptist Church in Union, Iowa where he was a Charter member and taught Sunday school for 60 years. Gene loved the farm, the hard work that came with it. He also loved to ride his Harley and work and ride horses. Gene will be remembered as a kind, gentle and compassionate person. He went thru many challenges but was tough as nails and was like a man with nine lives. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 62 years, Myreta, his children: Sandi (Dave) Baum of Ames, Iowa; Kim (Pat) Collins of rural Union, Iowa; and Teri Knuth of Ames, Iowa. Grandchildren: Chris (Debbie) Baum, Heather(Chris) Plucar, Ryan (Amina) Baum, K.C. (Kelly) Collins, Chad (Priscilla) Collins, Kaitlyn and Krya Knuth. Great-grandchildren; Calvin, Zach, Isabel Baum; Jack, Olivia, Parker Plucar; Erin, Evan, Emmett Collins; Malachi Knuth; and one on the way baby boy Baum. In death Gene rejoins his parents, Edward and Aleta, an infant son, and brothers; Maynard and Neil Collins.
