Gene E. Hartwig

Gene Hartwig, age 73 of Marshalltown, passed away at the University of Iowa Hospital on Wednesday, May 27, 2026.

Gene Ernest Hartwig was born on April 11, 1953, in Marshalltown, the son of Ernest and Marjorie (Lee) Hartwig. He graduated from Marshalltown High School and Marshalltown Community College. Gene was united in marriage with Deborah Jean (Dickey) Hartwig, and they welcomed one son, Daniel.

Gene worked at Emerson, formerly Fisher Controls, for over 40 years. Gene was a good husband, father, brother, neighbor, and friend. He was generous to everyone, lending a hand to those in need with no questions asked. Perhaps most importantly, he had a great sense of humor and enjoyed making those around him laugh.

Gene was an active member of the sprint car community, crewing for Brent Antill Racing. He even traveled with the team to Australia one year, and a yearly favorite of his was the Knoxville Nationals. Gene was a great fabricator, loved cars and motorcycles, and enjoyed gardening. He was an animal lover, especially of his rescue dogs: Abby, Lucy, Toby, Shelby, and Pee Wee.

Gene is reunited in death with his parents, Ernest and Marjorie, and wife, Debbie, who passed away in 2024. Left to cherish his memory are his son, Daniel Hartwig (Katja Broddesson) of Toledo and brother, Wayne (Carol) Hartwig of Green Mountain.
