George E. Dunham, Jr., 83, of 122 West Main Street, Marshalltown, former lifelong resident of LeGrand, died Sunday afternoon, May 6th, at the MMSC. Funeral services and a celebration of his life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 10th, at the LeGrand Friends Church with Pastor Alan Mullikin officiating. He will be laid to rest in the LeGrand Friends Cemetery with full military honors by the VFW Harry C. Harter Post #839. Friends may call at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home from 5-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Memorial gifts can be directed to the LeGrand Library, LeGrand Cemetery or the charity of your choice. Born on April 3rd, 1924, at LeGrand, Iowa, he was the son of George and Elice (Sutherland) Dunham, Sr. He graduated from the LeGrand High School and served our country honorably in the United States Navy during WWII. George served on the USS Reno (which was torpedoed) in the Philippines and the South Pacific. On March 4th, 1944, he was united in marriage to Shirley Overstake in Reno, Nevada. They made their home in LeGrand all of their married lives until moving to the Westtown Apartments in Marshalltown in June of 2005. He was a farmer and had been employed for 20 years at Fisher Controls. Mr. Dunham was a longtime member of the LeGrand Friends Church, the LeGrand Lions Club, LeGrand Senior Citizens, the VFW and American Legion and the LeGrand card club. He will be fondly remembered for his love of life, sense of humor, love for family and friends, playing cards and golf, nicknaming many people, raising watermelons, giving kisses and hugs and simply being a true people person. He will be greatly missed by many. Left to celebrate his life are his loving wife of 63 years, Shirley, four children: Don (Susy) Dunham of Marshalltown, Terry (Linda) Dunham of rural Marshalltown, Barry Dunham of rural Marshalltown and Vicki Skopp of the Southridge Nursing Home in Marshalltown, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, his brother Ralph at Southridge Nursing Home and a host of friends. In death he has rejoined his parents, brothers Charles, Audemere and Raymond and son-in-law Tom Skopp.
