George Washington Longman, 80, of Marshalltown, died October 28, 2009, with his family by his side at Valley View Nursing and Rehab Center after a long battle with Alzheimers.Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 31, 2009, at Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Burial will be in Green Mountain Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the family. Visitation will be on Friday from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Ph 641-844-1234.George Washington Longman was born on August 6, 1929, at home in Marshall County. He was the son of Arbie and Florence (Bonawitz) Longman. He graduated from Marshalltown High School. On June 10, 1951, George married Darlene Harris at Central Christian Church in Marshalltown. The couple lived in the Garwin area, then in Green Mountain from 1961-1987. George farmed, then worked for Gethmann Construction, and then at Fisher Controls as a tool and die maker and supervisor for almost 25 years. Darlene passed away in 1986. George then moved northeast of Marshalltown to the farm where he grew up, until failing health brought him to Valley View Nursing Home.He was a member of Garwin Christian Church. George enjoyed working and fishing. He was always helping others, loved his dogs and his Farmall tractor. He enjoyed playing 500 with his childhood friends, and he treasured his family.Left to miss George are his children, Mike (Sharon) Longman of Coppell, TX, Dan (Carol) Longman of Austin, TX, Kate (Craig) Walker of Marshalltown, Connie Longman of Eldora, and Tom Longman of Green Mountain; his grandchildren, Vanessa Longman, Matt Longman, Michelle Longman, Rebecca Longman, Beau Walker, and Shay Walker; his brother, Ted Longman of Brooksville, Florida; and several nieces and nephews.In death, George has rejoined his parents; his wife, Darlene; and his brother John Longman, who died in February of 2009.
