George Sorensen

September 9, 1926 — February 3, 2024

George Sorensen, age 97, longtime resident of Union, and member of the Greatest Generation, passed away Saturday night at the Oakview Nursing Home in Conrad with family at his side.

Services honoring his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 9th, at the Union Community Church in Union with Pastor John Richter officiating. Private family interment will be in the Union Cemetery at a later date. Full military honors will be presented by the Combined VFW/American Legion Honor Guard in the Marshalltown area. Visitation will be one-hour prior at the church. The Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown is caring for George and his family. Ph. 641-844-1234.

Born on September 9th, 1926, in Cambridge, Iowa, he was the youngest child born to Danish immigrants Peter and Clara (Geertsen) Sorensen, joining six older siblings. He graduated from the Union High School in 1943. He later served our country honorably in the United States Army during WWII.

On February 21st, 1948, he was united in marriage to Dorothy DeLawyer in Union at the church parsonage. They made their home in Union where they raised their children and he drove the rural postal route for over 30 years, making many multi-generational relationships along the way.

George was a member of the Union Community Church and a proud 79 year member of the American Legion, former town clerk and enjoyed camping, music and square dancing. There is no doubt in his family’s minds that he volunteered right away to be one of God’s helpers in fixing things. He and Dorothy also enjoyed 25 years of trips to Texas for the winter.

Left to cherish his memory are Dorothy, his loving wife of 76 years; his children- Peg Fulton of Marshalltown, Pat (Scott) Spicer of Marshalltown, daughter-in-law Toni Gooden in Missouri, his daughter Nancy's longtime companion Terry McGahuey of Marshalltown, 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

In death, George rejoined his parents, his daughter Nancy Frerichs, son Jerry Sorensen, and siblings Goldie Hanson, Inga Chrisman, Cenia Long, Fred Sorensen, Lillian Eggleston and Eva Cary.
