George Dale Strait, 70, passed away Monday, April 29, 2019, at the Iowa Veteran’s Home in Marshalltown, while under the loving care of the Ulery #3 staff. A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 11, 10:30 a.m. at the New Providence Roundhouse, New Providence, IA. George was the son of Standley and Geneva (Fern) Sizemore Strait, born on November 20, 1948 in Kirksville, MO. George graduated from New Providence High School in 1967 and attended Upper Iowa University for a short time. He received an honorable discharge from the Army after serving in Vietnam in 1969 and 1970. He was a member of the American Legion. George married Carol Hassman on December 28, 1970 and had two sons Jason and Jordan. They were later divorced. George and Tammy (Hill) Strait were married on June 1, 1979 and had two children Michael and Stephanie. George was in law enforcement for 15 years serving the Eldora PD and Hardin Co. Sheriff’s Dept. He retired from the State Training School after 17 years. George was elected to the Whitten City Council in 2008. He enjoyed rock and roll from the 1950’s, hanging out with his friends and helping them with odd jobs. George loved a cold beer and a good joke. He was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2009 and did his very best fighting against this life changing illness and finally won the battle when his body died. He got his mind back, his dignity back and his laugh back. The Alzheimer disease is finally dead but George is not. He just moved into the place Jesus had prepared for him. George is survived by his wife Tammy; their son Michael and his wife Tara of rural New Providence; their daughter Stephanie Choate and her husband Andy of rural Liscomb; his son Jason and his wife Jodi of Cedar Rapids, his son Jordan of Eldora; 6 grandsons and one brother Stan of Hampton. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Bina and Gilbert and sister Glenda Elliott. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the family for the purchase of therapy tools for dementia patients.
