Jerry Heying, 67, of Marshalltown passed away peacefully on September 9, 2015 at Mary Greeley Medical Center. On Sunday, September 13th (his 68th birthday), a public visitation will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Marshalltown, from 35 p.m. At 5 p.m., all are invited to share in a Remembrance and Celebration service of Jerrys life. Following the service, visitation time will resume from 68 p.m. A memorial fund has been established. Jerry was born on September 13, 1947 in Dubuque, Iowa. He was the son of Lorenz (Larry) and Elaine (Huebner) Heying. Jerry attended Dubuque Senior High School, graduating in 1965 and Wartburg College, graduating in 1969. He began his teaching and coaching career in Beloit, Wis. in 1969 where he taught biology and coached girls and boys basketball. He married Ann Miller on July 9, 1983. In June of 1985 they moved to Marshalltown, Iowa where he taught biology, human anatomy and DNA technology and coached girls basketball. His 1986 team won the Iowa High School Girls State Basketball Championshipthe first and only time in Bobcat history. He retired in 2011. Jerry loved teaching students at the high school and sharing his love of gardening with his students. The opening of the Bobcat greenhouse each year signaled the arrival of spring. He enjoyed sports and was an avid supporter of the Marshalltown Bobcats, Iowa State Cyclones, and his alma mater the Wartburg Knights. In his free time he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing cards and golf with his friends as well as traveling with his family. He is preceded in death by his parents, Larry and Elaine Heying. Jerry is survived by his wife of 32 years, Ann; his daughters Emily of St. Cloud, Minn. and Elizabeth of Washington, D.C.; his sisters Karen Heying of Washington, D.C. and Mary Kay (Bill) Frommelt of Kansas City, Mo, his brother Rich (Kim) Heying and nephew and niece, Hayden and Lauryn, of Vancouver, Wash., sister-in-law Beth (Dan) White of Waterloo, Iowa, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. To honor Jerry, his family encourages friends to join the national bone marrow donor registry through the Be The Match Foundation. Those interested can find more information and sign up at www.bethematch.org. Jerry was the recipient of a bone marrow stem cell transplant in 2012. Another way to honor him is to donate blood as Jerry received countless blood transfusions during the last four years.
