Gerald Robinson, 71, of the Iowa Veterans Home, died there early Friday morning, October 29. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 2nd, at the Iowa Veterans Home Chapel with Rev. Scott Lothe of the Hope United Methodist Church and Angela Doty, chaplain of the IVH officiating. Full military honors will be presented by the VFW Harry C. Harter Post #839. Visitation will be held from 5-7:00 p.m. Monday at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home and from 10:00 a.m. until the service time on Tuesday. For condolences, please visit www.mitchellfh.com. The Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Gerald and his family. Ph 641-844-1234. Born on December 18th, 1938, in Eagle Bend, MN, he was the son of Bernard and Marguerite (Chase) Robinson. He graduated from the Albion High Schools class of 1958.On January 28th, 1960, Gerald enlisted in the United States Navy and served our country honorably for two terms, ending in 1970. He was awarded the Good Conduct 1 Star Medal, National Defense Medal, Viet Nam Campaign Medal, Viet Nam Service Medal with 3 stars and Viet Nam Gallantry Cross with Palm medal, Combat Service Ribbon, and a Cold War Certificate. Gerald was stationed aboard the USS Kearsarge CVS-33, USS Everette F. Larson DD-830, USS Hampshire County LST-819, and finally the USS Charleston LKA-113.Gerald returned to be employed at National Handicraft from 1971-1979, Pinkertons from 1980 to 1991 and Wells-Fargo in 1992. He became a member of the Iowa Veterans Home Family in 1993. Mr. Robinson was a talented historian on the Civil War and was involved in several Civil War re-enactments. He was also quite the history buff and family genealogist as well as trivia king at the IVH. Gerald treasured his family and a good steak dinner and will be missed by many. Left to cherish his memory are his sister Betty Kremer of Marshalltown, niece Susan (Mike) Umbdenstock of Montour, nephew Scott Shaffer of Champaign, IL, grand-niece Jaime Eggers of Emmetsburg and grand-nephew Matt Eggers of LeGrand and many friends at the Iowa Veterans Home. In death, he rejoined his parents and brother, James Robinson.
