Glenn J. Freese, 76, longtime resident of the Van Cleve/Melbourne area, died Wednesday morning, March 25th, at the State Center Nursing and Rehab Center. His death came peacefully at 9:50 a.m. with family at his side. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 30th, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Marshalltown with Pastor Gregg Davison officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Melbourne Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 6:00 p.m. Sunday at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. A memorial fund is being established. Born on April 29th, 1932, in Melbourne, Iowa, he was the son of Clem John and Mildred Elizabeth (Lang) Freese. Glenn graduated from the Van Cleve High School and was raised, baptized and confirmed at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Haverhill. Glenn was united in marriage to Janella Mae Richeson in 1952. The couple later divorced and she passed away in 2003. Glenn farmed in the Melbourne and Van Cleve areas all of his life and most recently moved to LeGrand. Mr. Freese later was married to Carol (Thornes) Plum. They resided on the farm. He raised registered Ayrshire cattle and was a member of the Marshall County Fair Board (served as past-president), 4-H, Melbourne Volunteer Fire Department, Logan Township Trustee for Marshall County where he assisted with building permits and Logan Cemetery issues among others, and was a past member of the Knights of Columbus. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife Carol, his children: Lynette (George) Smith of Melbourne, Alecia (Frank) Loutsch of Grinnell, Glenda (Donald) Baker of Marshalltown, Roger (Jana) Freese of Marshall, Texas, Matt (Kris) Freese of Marshalltown, son-in-law John Casey of Marshalltown, nine grandchildren: Catherin, Valerie and Gayle; Nicole and Tiffany; Cody and Michael; Trevor and Travis, step-grandchildren: Rachel and Jennifer, one-great-grandchild Brooklynn, step-great Dillon and Kacie, his brother Bernard Freese of Stanwood, Iowa and sister Elizabeth Betty Ann (Edward) Spickert of Marshalltown. Also surviving is Carols family: Debi (Harlan) Helgren of Jefferson, Iowa, Larry Plum of Montour, Alice (Bob) Roberts of LeGrand, Gregory Plum (companion Shawna Parker) of Britt, Iowa, eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and a host of friends and neighbors. In death, Glenn rejoined his parents and daughter Rhonda Casey.
