Glenn Stalzer, 82, longtime Marshalltown businessman, died Saturday evening, March 20th, at the Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 25th, at St. Henrys Catholic Church with Fr. Don Czapla officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Immaculate Conception Cemetery at Haverhill with full military honors by the Harry C. Harter VFW Post #839. Visitation will be held at the church Wednesday starting with a 4:00 p.m. Knights of Columbus Rosary, open visitation from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. and a 7:00 p.m. public vigil service. The Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Glenn and his family. Ph 641-844-1234. Born on December 7th, 1927, at Haverhill, he was one of 10 children born to John and Theresa (Jansen) Stalzer. Glenn graduated from the Van Cleve High School in 1945 and soon entered the United States Navy, serving our country honorably just after WWII. On April 17th, 1950, he was united in marriage to Annabelle Heil at St. Marys Catholic Church in Marshalltown. They made their home farming near Haverhill until moving to Marshalltown in 1979. In 1976, he purchased Skatetown and operated this local landmark until 2005 as well as owning Curtis Mathes since 1983 and Carpet-Country (later Flooring Gallery) since 1981. Glenn also sold insurance for 50 years and was instrumental in the operation of the telephone co-op in Haverhill until its sale to Heart of Iowa. He served as board president just like his father did. Mr. Stalzer was passionate about his work and gave so much of his time as well volunteering in faith-based ministries and Catholic education. He was proud of his work ethic he instilled in his children. He was a faithful member of St. Henrys Church, the Knights of Columbus 4th Degree and the American Legion. Left to cherish his memory are Annabelle, his loving wife of 60 years, four children: Gloria Stalzer of Marshalltown, Dan (Teri) Stalzer of Clive, Marcia Decker of Marshalltown and John Stalzer of Marshalltown,eleven dear grandchildren: Holly (Larry) Hamilton, Matt (Stevanna) Baskerville, Troy (Hanna) Baskerville, Joe (Kara) Stalzer, Monique Stalzer, Brian (Tricia) Wolfswinkel, Beth (Andrew) Holland, Maria (Zosh) Zeutenhorst, Alaina (Adam) Daters, Madison and Drake Stalzer, eight precious great-grandchildren: Kaitlyn, Evan, Camden, McKenna, Olivia, Hayden, Anya and Addox as well as his siblings: Lester (Arlene) Stalzer of Haverhill, Dorothy (Chuck) Richards of Jewell, Mary Helen Bates of Marshalltown, Anna Mae (Frank) Navara in Arizona, Irene (Harold) Heil of Zearing and many nieces and nephews as well as the Heil family. In death, Glenn was rejoined by his parents, his son-in-law Dennis Decker, siblings Elsie Kopel, Clarence (Betty) Stalzer, Irma (Cliff) Smith and Ethel (Bud) Neuroth.
