Gordon Yeager 94 and his loving bride of 72 years- Norma Yeager, 90, of State Center, Iowa, passed away together, hand in hand, at the Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center on Wednesday, October 12, 2011, while surrounded by their family. Visitation for Gordon and Norma will be held from 5:00 p.m. 7:00 p.m., Sunday, October 16, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home West Marshall Chapel in State Center. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, October 17, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. Following cremation, a private family burial will be held at a later date at Hillside Cemetery in State Center. Memorial contributions may be directed in their names to their family. For further information or to send a condolence please visit www.mitchellfh.com or call (641) 844-1234. Gordon was born October 8, 1917 in Minnesota, the son of David and Lucille (Mercer) Yeager. He was raised and educated in Minnesota on the family farm until he moved to State Center when he was sixteen years old. Gordon left home at an early age and served his country in the Civilian Conservation Corps under PresidentFranklin Roosevelt. He also served as a welder at the shipyards in San Francisco. Gordon was an inventor by heart and loved to tinker and fix things. He was a people person and also enjoyed fishing, golfing and boating. Norma was born December 9, 1920, in Churdan, Iowa, the daughter of Clifford and Bessie (Barr) Stock. Their family lived in Churdan for a short time before settling in State Center. She graduated from the State Center High School in 1939. Norma and Gordon were married on May 26, 1939, in State Center, Iowa. Following their marriage they made their home in State Center where together, they raised their family. During their lives, Gordon and Norma owned and operated the Gamble Store, Home Oil, The Wood DuckLounge, and the Chevrolet Garage in State Center. Gordon was a an active member of the State Center community having served as Mayor, a City Councilman and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in State Center, the Lions Club, Masons, State Center Fire Department, Rose Board, Cemetery Board. Norma was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Order of the Eastern Star. They are survived by their children: Donna Sheets of State Center and Dennis Yeager of State Center, Normass sister Virginia Kell of San Diego, California, and Gordons brother Roger (Vivian) Yeager of Marshalltown, fourteen grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. They were preceded in death by their parents, Normas siblings: Margaret West and Cleo Poling, Gordons siblings: Orie, Edith, Ethel and Shirley, and their two sons: Gordon Yeager Jr. and Roger Yeager.
