Gregory "Smitty" Wayne Smith

Gregory Wayne Smith “Smitty” age 74, of Marshalltown, Iowa, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, May 30th, 2023, surrounded by his family.

Born on December 13th, 1948, in Marshalltown, Iowa, to Wayne M. Smith and Jeanne L. (Walker) Smith. He graduated from Gladbrook high school in 1967 and attended Marshalltown Community College. Greg worked at Fisher Controls for 35 years, retiring in 2004. He was a co-owner of Allerfree Cleaning Systems with his son Casey.

Greg married his best friend and love of his life, Nuala (Leavy) Smith. They were blessed with three children and 54 years of marriage.

Smitty was a talented musician, songwriter, and singer. He is well known for lead vocals and harmonica in the band “Phafner”. He was an avid record collector, and his love for ’50s and ‘60’s music was shared with the community when he and Nuala DJed for over 40 years.

Smitty loved all sports, especially Iowa Hawkeye football, and wrestling. He was a supportive father and grandfather, rarely missing a sporting event, performance, or activity with children and grandchildren.

Spending time with family and friends brought Smitty the most joy. He loved telling stories, cracking jokes, and reciting Irish toasts. He was a beloved husband, father, grandpa, papa, brother, uncle, and friend.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife Nuala, his children, Casey Smith of Urbandale, Katie (Michael) Smith of Bondurant, his seven grandchildren, O’Sheen (Makynze) Smith, Ailish (Isaac) Enos, Eamon, Grainne, Ethan, Quinlan, Aidan, his great-grandson Wayne, daughters-in-law Angel and Brenda, and foster daughter Tammy Raymond, his two brothers Kevin (Debbie) Smith of Grand Junction, Colorado and Dennis (Barb) Smith of Gladbrook; his loving Leavy in-laws, along with countless nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Greg is preceded in death by his parents, his beloved son Sean, and his brother Steve.

Visitation and services will be held at Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Visitation will occur on Friday, June 2nd, from 5-7 P.M. Funeral services for Greg will take place on Saturday, June 3rd at 10:30 A.M. Greg will be laid to rest at Riverside Cemetery following services.
