Gus N. Pappas, 80, of Marshalltown, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, February 15, 2015, surrounded by his loving family, and under the care of Iowa River Hospice. A Memorial Gathering will be held in Guss honor from 1:00 3:00 p.m., on Saturday, February 21, 2015, at the First Congregational Church of Marshalltown. Cremation rites have been accorded and Gus will be laid to rest at a later date. Memorials may be directed to the family for designation at a later time. The Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Gus and his family. Gus N. Pappas was born on March 6, 1934, in Des Moines, Iowa. He was the son of Nick and Opal (Fish) Pappas. He was raised and educated in the Granger area, before graduating from Perry High School in 1952. Gus attended Drake University, graduating from Drake College of Pharmacy in 1956. After working one year at Wicks Pharmacy in Mason City, Gus joined the U.S. Army and worked in the Fort Leonard Wood Hospital Pharmacy for two years. Gus moved to Marshalltown in 1959 and began working as a pharmacist for Greger Drug. He purchased the business in 1977, and continued operating it until 1989. After selling Greger Drug, Gus went to work for Randall Pharmacy. He later worked at the Econo Foods Pharmacy, retiring in 2004. On April 7, 1977, Gus married Bonnie Curtis Crabtree in the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. During his professional career, Gus was a member of the American Pharmacy Association, the Iowa Pharmacy Association, and was past president of the Marshall County Pharmacy Association. He was a member of the First Congregational Church and served on the Diaconate Board. Gus was also a member with the Marshalltown Mens Bowling League since 1960. Left to cherish Guss memory are his wife, Bonnie Pappas; children: Michael Pappas of Kansas City, Missouri; and Diane Pappas Lochner of Marion, Iowa; stepchildren: Steven (Rose) Crabtree of Roswell, New Mexico; James (Agnes) Crabtree, of Brooklyn, Iowa; and Debra (Jon) Reuter, of Marshalltown. Grandchildren: Gabrielle, Derek, Triston, Trinity, Desiree, Kayla, Jeannie, Ashley (Jeff) Goble, Kelli (Dave) Killean, and Benjamin. Great-grandchildren: Shaun, Amelia, Finnegan, and one more on the way; special friends: Mary Drake, Norma Dannen, and Jack and Terry Tremain. In death, Gus joins his parents, Nick and Opal.
