Harriet Elaine Beaty was born at home in rural Marshalltown, Iowa, on June 14, 1941. She was the second of four children born to John and Palma (Durby) Beaty. She attended school in the Marshalltown area and later graduated from Marshalltown High School with the Class of 1959.
Hatti began working for Lennox Industries in Marshalltown following high school until the time of her marriage. She married Larry Groth on January 10, 1960, at Elim Lutheran Church. To that union, they welcomed their children, Steve, Sandy, Stan, and Greg. She was a caring and devoted mother as well as a great help to Larry on the farm. They enjoyed grain farming and raising a cow/calf herd together.
She stayed on the farm until Larry passed away and then moved into Marshalltown. Hatti later worked for Mid-Iowa Co-op in their Marshalltown, and eventually Haverhill, offices before her retirement.
Hatti stayed busy outside of her family activities, being an active member of her church, where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday school. Additionally, she found many other community activities to be involved in. In her free time, she enjoyed working in her flower and vegetable garden, golfing, and hosting family holidays. She loved playing games, especially cards, with family and friends. Her family was of the utmost importance to her — from making meals to attending as many of her kids’ and grandchildren’s activities as she could. She cherished family traditions, animals, and nature and shared that love with all her kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids.
Those left to remember and cherish her memory are her children, Sandy (Larry) Benda and Stan (Leslie) Groth; her grandchildren, Ashley Benda,Greg (Courtney) Benda, Jacob (Sarah) Groth, and Haley (Sam) Upah; her great-grandchildren, Gabbie and Zoey Benda, Gavin and Elsie Groth, and Evelyn, Bennett, and Ava Upah; her siblings, Helen Maddick and Larry
(Kathy) Beaty; her brother-in-law, Marvin (Susan) Groth; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Larry Groth (1994); her children, Steve Groth (1983) and Greg Groth (1975); her parents, John and Palma Beaty; her mother- and father-in-law, Louis and Emma Groth; her brother, John Beaty; and her great-granddaughter, Iris Benda.
