Harriet Johnson

Harriet Johnson, 88, passed away Friday, June 29, 2012, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. She was a Des Moines resident until January when she moved to Grandview Heights Rehab and Health Center in Marshalltown. Graveside services will be held on Saturday, July 14th, at 11:00 a.m. at the Riverside Cemetery in Marshalltown. Harriet was born on February 19, 1924, in Marshalltown the daughter of Rev. Artice and Margaret Maxwell. She graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1943. Upon graduation she enrolled at Crescent School of Beauty in Des Moines the first black school in the state which trained black beauticians. She was the owner of H.K.s Beauty Shop for many years serving customers on Des Moines Eastside.Harriets immediate survivors are sisters Margaret Beavers of Los Angeles, CA, Shirley Cox of Des Moines, IA, brother Roger (Arenda) Maxwell of Windsor Heights, IA and many cousins, nieces and nephews who truly loved Harriet and Aunt Harriet. She was preceded in death by her husband Charles B. Johnson, her parents Rev. and Mrs. Artice Maxwell and brothers Robert and Ralph Maxwell.The family wishes to express its deep appreciation to the administration and staff at Grandview Heights for the wonderful care provided to Harriet.
