Harvey Gene Vis, 76, of Marshalltown, died November 4, 2010 surrounded by his family under the care of Grandview Heights Rehabilitation Center and Iowa Hospice.Visitation will be held at the Le Grand Friends Church on Monday, November 8, 2010 from 6 to 8 p.m. Services will be held at the Le Grand Friends Church on Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at 1:30 p.m. Committal services will be held at the Le Grand Cemetery following the service. Phone 641-844-1234HHarvey Gene Vis, son of Peter and Johanna (Vanden Berg) Vis, was born on January 3, 1934 in Hull, Iowa. He attended school in the area of his birth. Harvey was married to Coralynn Van Diepen on August 6, 1954 in Boyden, Iowa. That same year, Harvey joined the Army where he also attended carpentry school. He was stationed at Camp Hanford in Washington State. Early in his life, he was as a brick layer apprentice, worked in the egg business and managed a bowling alley and caf. In 1959, Harvey and Coralynn moved to the Marshalltown area where he attended vocational school for furnace and air conditioning. He then trained at Lennox Industries and later worked for ACI. In the late 1960s, he started his own heating and air conditioning business, later expanding into seamless gutters with three Iowa locations. In 1974, he incorporated a new business, Vis, LTD Roofing which is still in operation today. Harvey and his sons also built a go cart track called Mid America Race Place and miniature golf course. He served on the Le Grand Park and Recreation board where his favorite project was personally building Le Grands Marilyn Larson Amphitheatre. Harvey was a member of the American Legion, Center Street Baptist Church and the Le Grand Friends Church. He was a lifetime advocate for the Republican Party and met three U.S. Presidents, as well as, attended the Inauguration of President Ronald Reagan. Harvey was an avid collector of Earnhardt memorabilia and loved to travel the NASCAR circuit. He was a huge fan of local stock car and go cart racing. He also had an interest in G scale trains, softball, and watching the Iowa Hawkeyes. Harvey will be remembered for his great sense of humor, his animation and his speak his mind attitude.He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Coralynn of Le Grand; his children: Loran (Florence) Vis of Le Grand, Vicki (Mark) Grossman of Marshalltown, Don Vis of State Center, and Shannon (Aaron) Mitchell of Le Grand; 9 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; his siblings: Marie De Ruiter of Hull, Clayton (Mae) Vis of Hull, and Arnetta (Melvin) Van Peursem; other family members and many friends.He is preceded in death by his parents Peter and Johanna; his siblings: Peter Vis, Gerald Vis, Anthony Vis, and Christian Vis.
