Hazel Rhoades

September 26, 1940 — December 1, 2022

Hazel Rhoades, 82, of Des Moines, Iowa and formerly of Marshalltown, passed away on the morning of December 1, 2022 at the University Park and Rehab Center surrounded by her loving family.


At this time, cremation rites have been accorded and no formal service is planned at this time. Memorials in Hazel’s name may be directed to her family for a later designation. Mitchell Family Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements for Hazel. Hazel Marie Proffitt was born September 26, 1940 to parents Lamaxus and Mabel (Mallatt) Proffitt in Marshalltown, Iowa. She was the youngest of nine children in her family. Hazel spent her younger years in Liscomb, Iowa until attending high school in Marshalltown and graduated from Marshalltown High School in the Class of 1959.


On June 11, 1981 she was united in marriage to the love of her life, Richard Rhoades. Together they added her four children and created their loving family. Hazel loved to be around children and had owned and operated her own in-home daycare for many years. In addition, she did part-time work doing in-home cleanings for her trusted clients. In her free time, she loved to care for others, spend time around people, take time go shopping, hanging around her home and then spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.


She is survived by her daughters: Diana (David) Payne and Christine (Gabe) Sheppard; her grandchildren: Anthony Johnson, Megan Locke, Nicole Johnson, Katelyn Johnson and Alexis Sheppard and her great-grandchildren: Christian Johnson, Hunter Johnson, Alliah Robinson, Kaiden Johnson, Kaleb Robinson, Jaxson Johnson and Addison Smet; and her brother Dale (Maryanne) Proffitt.


She is preceded in death by her husband Richard; her daughters: Karen and Amanda Locke; her parents, Lamaxus and Mabel Proffitt and her seven siblings.
