Helene Anne Edel, 86, of Marshalltown, peacefully passed away at her home on Saturday, December 1, 2018. Helene Anne Schemmel was born on September 2, 1932 in Granville, Iowa to Alphonse and Rose Spieler Schemmel. Helene graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1950 and went on to receive her Associates Degree in Office Administration from Ottumwa Heights. Immediately following, she moved to Washington D.C. to work at the US Chamber of Commerce. On June 27, 1953, Helene was united in marriage to Matthew Edel at St. Mary Catholic Church in Marshalltown. Helene was a devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister, and grandmother. In addition to her work at home and on the family farm, Helene worked as a secretary at Marshall County R.E.C., Charon’s Green House and for the Marshalltown Mental Health Center. She was an active member of St. Henry Catholic Church and enjoyed volunteering at the House of Compassion, the Emergency Food Box and Public Library. Above all Helene was devoted to God and lived her life sharing her faith with others. Helene is survived by her children: Jeanne (Steve) Armstrong of Prior Lake, Minnesota, Greg (Jenny) Edel of Marshalltown, Anne (Curt) Sinks of Aurora, Colorado, Joe (Leisa) Edel of Marshalltown, Sharon (Terry) Whaley of Marshalltown, Chuck (Susan) Edel of Indianapolis, Indiana, Doug Edel of Anamosa, Ken (Sara) Edel of Charlotte, North Carolina, Marisue Edel of Marshalltown and Daughter-In-Law Peg Edel of Marshalltown. Grandchildren: Jayne and Michael Armstrong, Raina Edel, Connor Sinks, Josh, Zach and Johnny Edel, Jake (Heidi), Nick (Baylie) and Rachel Whaley, Abbey, Gabe, Katie and Ellie Edel and Matt and Margaret Ann Edel. She is also survived by her brothers; Don (Mary Lou) Schemmel, Leon (Ruth) Schemmel Tom (Mary Pat) Schemmel, Bob (Susie) Schemmel, as well as her many nieces and nephews, in-laws and other loving family members. Helene is rejoining her husband Matthew; daughter in infancy Margaret, and her son Jim. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, December 6, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Henry Catholic Church in Marshalltown. A Rosary service will be held at 4:30 PM, Wednesday, December 5th, followed by visitation from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown with a Vigil service to follow.
