Herb Johnson

April 4, 1931 — February 19, 2014

Herb Johnson, 82, lifelong LaMoille resident, died early Wednesday morning, February 19th, at the Iowa River Hospice Home in Marshalltown. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 22nd, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. He will be laid to rest in the Marietta Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-7:00 p.m. on Friday. Memorials may be directed in his memory to the LaMoille Congregational Church or Iowa River Hospice. Johnson on April 4th, 1931, at home on the family farm near LaMoille, he was one of four sons born to Fred and Viola (Strawbridge) Johnson. He was a 1949 graduate of the LaMoille High School. While roller skating in Marshalltown, he met the lovely young Lola Bryngelson and the two were united in marriage on July 26th, 1950, at her parents home. Herb farmed alongside his dad and brother, Chuck, all of his life at LaMoille. He was a member of the LaMoille Congregational Church, the Albion Damascus Masonic Lodge, Central Chapter OES, Mid-Iowa Antique Power Association, the NRA, the Moose Lodge and the Isaak Walton League. Many will remember Herb for his out-going personality and his forthright demeanor. He enjoyed people, going dancing with Lola, country music events and jams and treasured his family especially the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Left to cherish his memory are Lola, his loving wife of 63 years, three daughters: Nancy (Bob) Edler of Des Moines, Judy (Tab) Hill of Marshalltown and Teri (Larry) Schoborg of Union; ten grandchildren and their families- Angela (Brian) Johnson and Tricia, Jordan, Amber, and Conner all of Altoona; Jeff (Dani) Edler and Ellery as well as one on the way in June all of Altoona; Brian (Kirstin) Hill and Healey and Cela all of Granger; Joel (Darci) Hill and Katie, Kevin and Kara all of Union; Kyle (Nelly) Hill and Eva, Loey and Violet all of Cedar Rapids; Tiffany (Wade) Weaver and Jack, Sam and Kaitlyn all of Pella; Brandon (Lisa) Schoborg and Olivia, Ellie and Aubrey all of Hudson; Charles Thomas of LaMoille; Trevor Thomas of Cedar Rapids and William Thomas of Marshalltown. Also surviving are his brothers- Charles Chuck (Jean) Johnson of LaMoille, James (Sharon) Johnson of Union and John (Janet) Johnson of Union as well as his son-in-law Ron Cook of Marshalltown and many nieces, nephews and friends. In death, he rejoined his parents and his youngest daughter Lori who died on June 26th, 2011.
