Hilda Engle

Hilda Engle, 99, of Marshalltown, died late Wednesday night, January 9th, at the Villa del Sol where she has resided since March of 2010. Her death came peacefully with her family at her side and under the loving care of the Villa del Sol and Iowa River Hospice. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 14, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home with Pastor Jim Bonzer of the Stavanger Friends Church officiating. Born on October 26th, 1913, in LeGrand Township in Marshall County, Iowa, she was the daughter of William and Verna L. (Clark) Jubeck. She received her education in the area of her birth. Hilda ventured to California with her sister to begin work at Douglas Aircraft during WWII. On January 3, 1945, in Troy, Kansas, she was united in marriage to Fred Engle. The couple farmed side by side. Mrs. Engle was a member of the Stavanger Friends Church, the Stavanger Sewing Circle, enjoyed playing cards and had been a dancer in the Blue Ridge Mountaineers in the late 1920s. She also had a role in the movie, Rain. She and Fred enjoyed winters in Texas, but a highlight of their married lives was being baptized in the Jordan River in the Holy Land on a trip there. She enjoyed flowers, giving of herself and was still doing crafts just a week prior to her passing. Left to cherish her memory are her step-children: Doris Booth of Arvada, Colorado; Floyd Donnie (Darlene) Engle of Newton and June Veverka of Frederick, Colorado: 10 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and 35 great-great-grandchildren. Even though she and Fred had no children together, her nieces and nephews were always her special children that were there to assist and help. There are many including- Donna (Darwin) Lynch, Dwayne (Maxie) Shultz and Dennis (Mary) Shultz all of Marshalltown as well as many other generations to follow. She is also survived by her sister, Leona Schultz of the Villa del Sol. In death, Hilda rejoined her beloved Fred who died on November 12, 1997, her parents, three step-grandchildren, her brothers William (Rita) and Robert, and sister Mamie (Alfred) Shultz.
